Reset a Norstar switch back to defaults the nice way?
(and apply a default programming template: Square/Hybrid/PBX)
-Within 5 minutes of a hard reset (available in a Modular/Plus) or power on:
-F ** STARTUP (7327887) -password is 266344 like the programming one. You will be asked
which template you wish to apply to the switch. (differences vary as per switch type.)
-Switch reloads flash from rom (or runtime flash from r/o flash) and reboots in a few seconds
with a factory-clean setup.
Reset a Norstar the 'difficult' way?
Most all Nostar ksu's have a small 1-farad capacitor (often mistaken for a battery) which provides
a few micro-miliamps to keep the CMOS ram, with your switch/customer data, intact for a long time.
Opening the main unit, look for a three-quarter inch round, quarter-inch thick capacitor. It is easily
identified by it's enormous size compared to any other electrolytic 'cap' on the board. For instance,
it's located in the upper-left corner of a 616. May be purple? Black?
On some systems, like 8x24's or in Modular 8x24's, i am told the 'cap' is in the software cartridge
itself. Have a look - i haven't pulled one of those apart. Some say it's a battery too... hmnn.
With Northern Telecom's brilliantly simple design, you'll find that the main board will come out
pretty easily; a screw perhaps two, and a snap-fit of some sort. (Do touch a ground source first
for that extra measure against that static which you've never had a problem with anyhow...)
Locate the capacitor's two pins. Now, some docs suggest simply shorting this out. I would
recommend a much gentler method, as capacitors, even at this size, can hold a pretty heavy
charge if you are a millionth of a centimetre transistor in a chip on that board. Think about it.
Use a little lightbulb or some other resistive component, and hold it firmly across the pins. When
the bulb is extinguished in a second, your capacitor is safely empty. Then a short across the cap
can safely ensure it's completely flat. Power on the switch and voila. "266344" my friend.
StarTalk tidbits:
What are my StarTalk feature codes?
(From a 7310 set, as you need softkeys...)
F9*1 - displays all feature codes used in the range.
Reset a StarTalk "System Manager" mailbox?
(From a 7310 set, as you need softkeys...)
-FEATURE 985 (shows the DN of the StarTalk unit.)
-Hit 9, and upon the Pswd: prompt, enter: 73738767793
(RESETSMPSWD)
-You'll be asked for confirmation. Default is 0000
>(3-digit mbx: 1020000 or 2-digit mbx: 120000)
Reset the "Operator" Password?
(this would be for FEATURE 982)
-FEATURE 985 (shows the DN of the StarTalk unit.)
-Hit 7, and upon the Pswd: prompt, enter: 7373867377793
(RESETOPERPSWD)
-You'll be asked for confirmation.
The default is: OPERATOR (67372867).
Software version of StarTalk?
-Log in to the sys coordinator's mbx, and from the main menu, hit 9.
Initialise StarTalk to factory default?
-FEATURE 983
-at the Pswd: prompt, enter CONFIG (266344)
-You will then be asked to set:
DN length: (2, 3, or 4?)
Bilingual? (Yes/No)
Primary Lang? (English + [locale specific])
Group Lists? (Y/N)
GList lead dig: (single digit)
From the manual:
"Important:>The Group List Leading Digit can be any number from 0 to 9. The Special Mailbox
numbers automatically begin with 1, so if you select a Group List Leading Digit of 1, the Special
Mailbox numbers will begin with 2. For example, the System Coordinator mailbox would be 22.
The Group List Leading Digit cannot be the same as the first number of the mailboxes on the
Norstar system."
After hitting "OK",
System Config (is displayed) You must confirm with OK or RETRY. This is your last chance.
Display reads "Configuring..." and can take up to 4 minutes to complete. Don't unplug it.
Reset a RAD?
Note: Needs 2 intercom keys assigned.
(you'll need a 7310 for the function keys)
-FEATURE 9 * *
-Hit left display key 5 times
-Hit center display key 7 times
-Hit right display key 8 times
-Hit HOLD, 2, 1, then RLS (Release)

Dig into the Norstar's secret DEBUG facility?
-change time/date to Feb 1/91
-FEATURE * * DEBUG (**33284)
-password is 144900
(!!! You are now in DEBUG - publicly undocumented.)
This is taken from another document on how to retrieve a lost installer password without having
to do a system reset the hard way; Losing all customer data along the way. It didn't cover any
non-US/CA switch software versions and so was left out to avoid disappointment.
