---------------------------------- EMX v1.1 by Mike Prudence (mjp@hplb.hpl.hp.com) 1. INTRODUCTION EMX is a small program that allows you to read, write and format Emax I and Emax II disks on your IBM PC or compatible. It's main use is to allow uploading and downloading of samples for transfer over the net. EMX deals with three types of files: o Emax I bank files, suffix '.em1'. o Emax II bank files, suffix '.em2'. o Emax operating system files, suffix '.emx'. 2. HOW TO USE The following sections describe the use of EMX in more detail. The procedures for using the program with an Emax I and an Emax II are identical, and hence I refer to both machines when talking about an 'Emax'. Remember an Emax II can read Emax I disks, so Emax II user can use the Emax I sound files in the Emu Sound Library Section. 1. Reading and Writing an Emax disks. A. To read an Emax disk, put the disk in your 3.5 drive and select option 'R' from the menu. Answer the prompts and EMX will begin extracting the bank and sample data from the Emax disk and will place the *.em1 or *.em2 file on your hard drive. B. To write a file to an Emax disk, put the target Emax disk in your 3.5 drive, and select the 'W' option from the menu screen. Select your drive letter and give the filename to write. EMX will begin writing the file to your Emax disk. For example: thebliss.em1 is what you would enter for a filename. 2. Formatting Emax disks. A. It is possible to format disks on the PC for use in an Emax. But the formatted disk on your PC can only be used to boot the Emax up, not store bank and sound data on. 3. Grabbing and Putting the Emax Operating System. A. If you intend to format Emax disks on your PC, you'll need to grab a copy of the Emax operating system from the Software Utilities Section. However, you can also upload and download a copy of the OS from an Emax disk. Again, stick the disk in the drive, and select 'G' from the EMX menu. This will grab the operating system from the disk and place it in the specified file. As a default, EMX will supply the name 'emaxos.emx' for the target filename. You are recommended to use this name, as the formatting procedure assumes it will find an operating system in a file of that name. If you own both an Emax I and an Emax II, life can get a little confusing at this point. To save your sanity, it's probably best to have separate directories on your hard drive - one for the Emax I and one for the Emax II. In each directory, you should grab a copy of the relevant operating system from an Emax I/II disk. 3. THE WALK THRU 1. Download the EMX software, your Emax OS & whatever sound files you want from EMAX HQ's. 2. Unzip the EMX software, your Emax OS & sound files onto your hard drive under the same directory. (For example: C:\EMX) 3. Format the disks you want to use on your Emax. 4. Put the disk in your 3.5 drive. 5. Start the EMX program. 6. Lets say you want to write a file you've downloaded to a disk to use in your Emax. Choose "W" from the menu, enter your drive, enter a filename for example thebliss.em1, EMX will then copy the bank & sound data to your disk. Thats it, pop it out, stick it in your Emax and Load it up. If you have an questions, problems, or suggestions concerning EMX, please contact the author: Mike Prudence (mjp@hplb.hpl.hp.com)
